Chauffeuring Services & Transportation Alternatives
STUDENT DRIVER
Certain students have been approved to drive College vehicles. The Campus Services Office employs a group of students who may serve as your first contacts when looking for a student to drive. The entire list of student drivers is maintained in the Campus Services Office and will be distributed to departments that request a copy. Alternatively, the list may be accessed from academic and administrative computer user’s public/shared drives. You should contact student drivers directly. Rates are $.48-$.53/mile plus the current student rate of pay per hour.
ARROW SEDAN SERVICE, NORTHWEST TAXI, AIRPORT TAXI, and CARE TENDERS
Transportation to and from the airport can be arranged by calling Eco Trans (formerly Care Tenders) (507-664-3859) (888-492-7433), Arrow Luxury Sedan Service (1-612-670-5620), Northwest Taxi (1-800-837-1867) or Airport Taxi (1-800-464-0555). Make reservations directly with the service.
NORTHFIELD TAXI SERVICES—Taxi Connection, 645-4447 and A & R Taxi Inc., 664-9474
The traveler should arrange trips in advance. Identify yourself, your department, and your four-digit department number for direct billing to the College. Passengers may be picked up or returned to any location within the Northfield area. Taxi drivers do not expect a gratuity and none would be charged to the College.
PERSONAL CAR
The College will reimburse parking charges and mileage for travel on College business equal to the allowable IRS rate (currently $.44.5/mile). It is important to note that any accidents incurred while driving your own car will fall to your personal insurance coverage even if you are driving on Carleton business. Any accident or violation may therefore affect your driving record and your insurance rates. Under the financial responsibility law for the State of Minnesota, an owner is legally responsible for his own vehicle when a second party is using the car. He or she becomes liable for any negligence of the driver of the car. For this reason we ask that all faculty and staff who use or loan their cars for authorized College trips be sure that satisfactory limits of insurance for bodily injury, property damage, and medical payments are carried. Satisfactory limits for Bodily Injury are $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident, and $50,000 for Property Damage Liability.
RENTAL CAR
Visitors to campus may arrange transportation for themselves through the many car rental agencies located at the airport and in the Twin Cities. Rates vary widely depending on type of vehicle and qualifying discounts. When you choose to use a rental agency outside of Northfield, you must make your own rental arrangements, you are responsible for meeting all of the terms of the rental contract that you sign, you are responsible for your own insurance, and you must pay the entire billed amount to the rental agency (including gasoline). You may request reimbursement for vehicle rental expenses when you travel on College business.
