Application Instructions for Returning Students

NOTE: TO RECEIVE PRIORITY CONSIDERATION FOR FUNDING, THE PROFILE AND FAFSA APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND ELECTRONICALLY SUBMITTED BY MARCH 31, 2008.

You can view the current status of your financial aid application documents by visiting

The Hub

After you log in, look under Students > Financial Information.

Applications submitted after March 31, 2008 will still be considered for financial aid. However, award amounts will be based on available funding and may not follow our normal guidlelines and practices.

Returning Carleton students must reapply for financial aid each year.

Students who do not have campus employment as part of their financial aid package but would like to work on campus next year will be required to complete the online Work Preference Form available under Step 4 of the instructions below. Please be aware, when assigning jobs to students, priority will be given to students who qualify for need based aid.

To complete the application process, follow the steps below:

STEP ONE:

File the 2008-2009 CSS PROFILE Application. Use Carleton College’s CSS code number 6081.

A valid credit card number must be provided to pay the processing fee.

STEP TWO:

File a 2008-2009 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or a Renewal FAFSA.

Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) are required for parent and student to complete the Renewal FAFSA application on the Web. If you filed a FAFSA (paper or electronic version) for the 2008-2009 academic year, the U.S. Department of Education has already sent you a PIN (personalized identification number), to be used online to complete your FAFSA application. If you have lost/forgotten your PIN, you can go to the U.S. Department of Public Education PIN registration site to request that another PIN be sent to you. Be sure your address is listed correctly on this web-site. Both the student, and one parent with financial information on the FAFSA, must have PIN numbers to electronically sign the FAFSA. Without these electronic signatures, the FAFSA will not be valid.

STEP THREE:

Submit federal tax documents to the College Board. After filing your PROFILE, you will receive correspondence from the College Board instructing you to submit federal tax documents to them on behalf of Carleton. If parent or student is not required by federal law to file taxes, they must complete the tax non-filer statement included in the College Board’s correspondence. If your parents own a business or farm, as a returning student your parents do not have to complete a Business/Farm Supplement. They only have to complete this as a incoming first year student.

The College Board will collect the following forms: signed final copies of parent and student 2007 federal income tax returns, including all 2007 W-2’s, 1099’s, schedules and attachments, (drafts or estimates are not acceptable), and non-filer tax statements. It is important that you send only one completed packet of information to the College Board. Please help us try to be more efficient by using this service. However, if you are not comfortable with this request, you may forward your tax documents directly to the Student Financial Services Office.

The Student Financial Services Office may need to collect other forms and information. If these are needed, they will be requested by Carleton and sent to you. Please complete them and return them to the Student Financial Services Office. Forms include:

  • Verification Worksheet (Dependent). Do not complete unless requested.
  • Non-filer Statement. Do not complete unless requested.
  • Other documents requested by the College (sent to you).

If you are required to submit a Verification Worksheet or other requested documents, please mail this information directly to the Student Financial Services Office.

STEP FOUR:

If you were awarded student employment as part of your financial aid package or you are a no need student interested in campus employment, login and complete the Student Work Preference Form by March 31, 2008. Any Work Preference Forms received after this date will be given consideration if positions are still available. The student employment amount shown on the award letter represents the maximum amount you can earn during the academic year. A student employment position or a certain number of hours is not guaranteed. If you know that you will be requested by a supervisor to work for them, there is no need to fill out the work preference form.
