Ten Pieces of Mostly Earnest Advice for Freshmen
February 17, 2009 at 1:35 pmIn my time here at Carleton, I’ve picked up many valuable pieces of advice from others, some not-so-valuable pieces of advice, and above all have forged through the trenches to come up with a few nuggets of wisdom of my own. Amazingly, I’ve been working with the Web Services Group for four years, long enough to remember the inception of this here blog back in the winter of ’05, when Tim Blaha '06 published his piece “Ten Things I Wish I Had Known as a Freshman.” With my time at this institution drawing to a close, here’s my take on the ten things I wish I had known as a freshman.
Unashamed: A New(ish) Student Publication
April 22, 2008 at 3:29 pmThe religious climate at Carleton is difficult to assess. On one hand, people could generalize forever about how most students here aren't particularly religious, but then again, what does that really mean, “not all that religious”? When I think about my own friends here, most if not all of them are in some way attached to religion, and if not they’ve at least mulled over its personal significance. That’s not to say that Carleton students frequently dive into religious conversations, but the notion that Carleton exists outside of all religious beliefs seems like an inaccurate and sweeping statement.
With this on my mind, I sat down last week with Joe Gammello '08 and Angie Kim ‘08, two editors behind the only campus publication solely devoted to religious issues, Unashamed.

Will Sodexho Go?
October 13, 2007 at 4:10 pmWe love to hate them: Glorpy salad dressing, mystery meat, dried-out rice stuck to the serving bowl. If there’s one thing about Carleton that binds us together, it’s either Frisbee or griping about the taste of Sodexho food (or lack thereof).
So when the dining hall contract came up for renewal, it generated plenty of student interest. The Facebook group devoted to the contract renewal process, Carls for Delicious Dining, had 248 members as of October 11. That’s approximately 14% of the student body! About thirty students attended the Dining Hall Public Forum on Wednesday.

Blind Date
October 4, 2007 at 1:24 pmKRLX's much anticipated "Blind Date" show hit the airwaves last Sunday.
In the words of the show's host, Lindsey Shaughnessy ’09, it was “almost as painful and prolonged as a real life blind date."
Following in the spontaneous, quirky, and popular steps of “Carleton’s Biggest Nerd”, the show was an instant hit.
Every week, an eligible bachelor (or bachelorette, in this case) goes on air along with three potential suitors. This week’s bachelorette was Bessie Schwarz, a senior Philosophy major and ENTS concentrator. She’s your typical, endearing Carleton gal who dominates the rugby fields and is quite fond of “Jewish stuff.”
The three bachelors on the show took nicknames so Bessie wouldn’t be influenced by their identities. These were Dwight, Squirtle, and Force-Field. As the DJ posed a slew of questions to each of the contestants, there was a definite tension in the KRLX studio. The guys awkwardly bumbled over their answers. Really, it was almost cute.
Daft Hands Does L.A.
September 26, 2007 at 3:30 pmIn Mid-September Austin Hall '10 went where few have gone before: the Ellen Show. Personally invited by comedian host Ellen DeGeneres, he performed his YouTube hit (with nearly 4 million views), Daft Hands.
Daft Hands is a remarkable work starring Hall's hands gyrating to the song Harder Better Faster Stronger by electronic group Daft Punk. (You may have heard this song sampled in Kanye West's summer hit Stronger.) Hall's smooth moves have spawned hundreds of copycat videos--most notably, one featuring a hapless dog with puppet-strings attached to paws.

While most Carls opt for Hogan Brothers’ or the Rueb n’ Stein, the coolest of the cool swagger into Tiny’s.
But what is it about this hot dog joint that makes it so darn hip?
88th Annual Intergalactic Superhero Supervillain Convention
June 4, 2007 at 2:30 pmSo I show up to Bell Field as it radiates with hundreds of glowsticks. The first thing I want to know when I get to the door is, How this can possibly be the 88th annual? Doesn't that mean it would have started in 1919? At Carleton, it's conceivable, but it doesn't seem like superheroes were too widespread back then.
Peggy at the Superhero/Villain Sign-Up Table helps me. The year numbers are measured in "intergalactic time warp units" that tend to produce a different number every year, not always going up. "It makes sense in their universe." She can tell me, though, that this is the convention's fifth year on campus.
Happy Birthday, Toff!
April 3, 2007 at 2:10 pmToff, Carleton's campus cat, turned ten on Monday. His birthday was celebrated by birthday cake in the dining halls and a special display in the bookstore of "Toff's List," recommended reading for anybody who is a fan of Toff. They included such titles as Life is Meals by James & Kay Salter, and Dump Him, Marry the Cat, by Andrea Donner. Postcards of him reclining next to Schiller were also available for 60 cents.
