The Murals at Myers
October 12, 2006 at 2:19 pm"Murals happen." That is the best explanation Peter Wilton '10 can give for the pictures that keep cropping up on Myers's walls. Myers is unique among Carleton residence halls in that its walls are lined with tiles that make a perfect surface for writing with dry-erase markers.
Rock Paper Scissors Tournament
October 10, 2006 at 7:00 pmRock, paper, scissors--a competitive college sport? It is at Carleton. On Saturday afternoon, students faced off in fierce competition, armed only with their bare hands.
Burton Food Olympics
September 26, 2006 at 3:41 pmBurton Hall put on a food-eating contest last weekend with four events: Wasabi, Save the Gummi Worm, Cracker Eating, and the Gallon Challenge.
CarlMUG Announces Winners of Craziest Face Contest
September 26, 2006 at 2:45 pmIf you attended Carleton's recent Activities Fair, you may have noticed people lining up for the chance to bend over a laptop computer and make strange faces into it. There was a method to their madness: They were entering the Craziest Face Contest put on by the Carleton Macintosh User Group (CarlMUG). Entrants' faces were edited with new Apple software, a program called Photo Booth, distorting them into something only a mother could love.
CarlMUG announced the two winners, Ezra Velazquez '10 and Beth Bennet '07. See their Before (normal) and After (warped) faces.
New Student Week 2006
September 20, 2006 at 2:17 pmNew Student Week 2006 welcomed 507 new faces to Carleton. The week was organized in a series of events for students to get to know the campus and one another. They included but were not limited to: the opening Frisbee toss and barbecue, the NOlympics, the freshman talent show, boomwhacker playing in the chapel and plenty of games played with New Student Week leaders and resident assistants.
Carls Spread the Word About the Northfield Clothing Shortage
September 20, 2006 at 11:00 amThis year's opening Frisbee toss at New Student Week included 507 discs and a fly-by parade of 39 Carls in the buff. Such a striking display of tan-lines meant only one thing: The city of Northfield is in dire need of clothing. Hundreds of incoming freshmen stood in jaw-dropped reverence as the au nauturel activists drew attention to this important cause.
Carleton Activities Fair
September 20, 2006 at 8:30 amFrom Habitat for Humanity to the Reformed Druids of North America, dozens of student clubs turned out for Carleton's annual Student Activities Fair last Friday, September 15. Each organization set up a table on the Bald Spot for passersby to learn about their group, ask questions, and join the club mailing list.
Carleton creativity and diversity was on full display as organizations vied for attention with demonstrations or models. Members of Naginata Club fought with poles in full battle dress, one of the Gender Neutral Cheerboys dressed up in a full suit of armor, and Carleton's many music groups were all playing their particular brand of music.
Brick Art in Burton
September 19, 2006 at 4:10 pmTo welcome students to their new home in "The Complex", the Burton, Severance and Davis resident assistants hosted a dinner and brick painting event on Sunday.
As the Severance Tea Room was converted into a music-filled brick-art studio, residents used paint and glitter to brush, drip, and drizzle designs onto dozens of bricks. Common themes included polka dots, stripes, Van Gogh-esque scenery and llamas. Yes, llamas.
Ease Is The Word
July 25, 2006 at 4:40 pmOn the last day of spring term, students gathered for a campus-wide carnival and barbeque all in the name of, well, fun.
Land of the Giants
June 5, 2006 at 9:52 amWander onto the Bald Spot this week and you'll feel like Alice in Wonderland after she unwisely sipped from that bottle labeled "Drink Me." Overnight, as if by magic, a gargantuan table and chairs appeared on campus, complete with a giant checkboard on top.
Well, not exactly magic. There was sweat, carpentry, insurance and logistics involved, according to Andy Grotting '06, who hatched the plan and carried it out with the help of collaborators Jane Larson '06 and Jack Rousseau '06. Unlike some campus pranks (last year's pool of goldfish comes to mind), the giant furniture was approved in advance by campus officials who helped keep the scheme hush-hush.
Some onlookers wondered out loud whether the Goliath furnishings were a senior comps project or part of the senior art show. Not so, according to Grotting. "I just always wanted to make something gigantic appear on campus overnight," he said.
The table and chairs will remain on the Bald Spot until Thursday, June 8.
The Best of the Security Blotter
May 27, 2006 at 4:14 pmWednesday, February 1
At 6:30 p.m., a student contacted Security after witnessing a full-size bus drive down the sidewalk through the townhouses resulting in damage to a kiosk, a porch and the bus itself.Tuesday, April 10
At 9:45 p.m., a Northfield resident complained about strobe lights, a siren, and a group of students milling about Benton House, which savvy students fortunately recognized as a fire alarm. Smoking grease on a warm stove was thought to be the source of the alarm. No fire.Friday, May 19
At 5:15 p.m., a student solicited Security for medical advice regarding an injury sustained after brakes failed to operate properly on the yellow bike the student was riding. The student was then transported to Northfield Hospital. In each issue of the Carletonian, Rob Morrow gives a rundown of events reported to Campus Security. The Security Blotter section often features accidents, injuries, small crimes and mishaps that have proven to be informative and, more often than not, utterly comical. This is the "best of" this year's security blotters.
Video: Delicious and Educational
May 23, 2006 at 10:27 amHungry? Then we recommend you eat before viewing our latest Shout submission, "Delicious and Educational," lest you drool on the keyboard (very bad for electronics, you know).
"This video features my lovely roommate, Elizabeth," says Carleton filmmaker Karina Hill '06. "As an Environmental and Technology Studies concentrator, she is required to design a final project related to environmental studies. Because she is talented in the culinary arts, she decided to combine this talent with her passion for the environment by teaching three cooking classes using local and organic foods. Watch this video to learn more about the importance of place in sustainability."
