Brick Art in Burton

September 19, 2006 at 4:10 pm

To welcome students to their new home in "The Complex," the Burton, Severance and Davis resident assistants hosted a dinner and brick painting event on Sunday.

As the Severance Tea Room was converted into a music-filled brick-art studio, residents used paint and glitter to brush, drip, and drizzle designs onto dozens of bricks. Common themes included polka dots, stripes, Van Gogh-esque scenery and llamas. Yes, llamas.

"But why bricks?!" you say? No, student-directed remodeling isn't in store for any of the dormitories. These chunks of outrageously-painted rock are commonly used by residents across campus as handy door-stoppers.

The resident assistants hope that along with their warm welcome, they will attract students to participate in Hall Community Board events. Hal Edmonson '09 will head up many west-side dormitory programs for the fall including apple picking, movie nights, community service programs, and all-dorm barbecues. To find out how you can get involved in HCB (or score a brick for yourself if your door won't stay open), contact Hal at edmonsoh@carleton.edu.
