Whad'ya Idol Winner, a Carleton Student!

April 24, 2007 at 2:33 pm

Congratulations to Aaron Kaufman '09, who won the national radio music contest Whad'ya Idol, an American-Idol-style competition sponsored by Whad'ya Know, a popular talk show on National Public Radio. A link to Aaron's winning song, "All My Life," can be found on their website,

Aaron is a DJ at KRLX of "The Alex Sciuto Revival Experience" and plays occasionally at the Cave and local businesses. "I've never done anything of this caliber," he says. He liked to listen to Whad'ya Know as a kid, and when his mother found out that they were holding open entries for a music contest, she encouraged him to enter.

"I almost didn't," Aaron admits. When he didn't hear back from them, he assumed that his entry didn't advance and he forgot all about it. Then he got the phone call from home: They'd just announced on air that he was a finalist.

As a finalist, Aaron got to play in NPR's recording studio in Madison, Wisconsin and meet Michael Feldman, the show's host. After a week of voting, Aaron's performance was voted the winner.

Aaron describes his music as "pop, a little folky and jazzy, but mostly pop." He has put together a CD, "For the Long Ride Home," that is available for sale on his Web site.

He says of the Whad'ya Idol contest, "It was a great experience."
