CarlWiki, or the Hitchhiker's Guide to Northfield

September 27, 2007 at 11:08 am

Don’t know what the letters CMC stand for? Want to know what’s with the bust of the dead German poet that keeps showing up on campus? CarlWiki, Carleton’s Wikipedia-style Web site, is an online trove of Carleton lore that answers these and other questions.

CarlWiki is a student-run website not associated with the Carleton website. Its format is like Wikipedia, meaning that anybody can add or edit information on its pages. This format is part of the secret to Wikipedia’s meteoric success, and it also means that CarlWiki contains information about Carleton that you just can’t find on the Carleton website.

For example, CarlWiki has articles with all the information you will ever need about who Joe Fabeetz is and why Crack House is named Crack House. It even gives the meaning of “sexile” and “stalkernet.” A couple of the longest articles are on Assassins and Schiller. CarlWiki is still small compared to Wikipedia, but it is growing, having recently added its 500th article.

CarlWiki was created in late 2004 by Trevor Burnham ’07 and is still completely run by Carleton students. Check it out if you are ever curious where Pigeon Field is.
