Getting Out the Vote, Insomniac Style

Monday of eighth week is a time when most Carleton students are glued to their desk chairs or couches in the libe, feverishly working on the infamous end-of-term flood of projects. Nevertheless, many students found a way to procrastinate and be productive at once, heading over to Sayles at midnight to work with the CarlDems to get out the vote for Obama. It's Midnight Madness!

The CarlDems had set up a table in Sayles, well-stocked with posters and flyers to put up around campus and candy and coffee to keep the midnight volunteers alert. The volunteers were assigned specific buildings and areas around campus to plaster with posters detailing how and when to vote, and who to call with questions. Since earlier in the day, students had been covering nearly every inch of sidewalk on campus with multicolored chalk encouragements to vote.

By the light of the moon and streetlights, volunteers scattered across campus to make absolutely sure that every student would be bombarded with reminders the next (or, technically, that same) day. There was a festive atmosphere to the whole thing, and the job was finished fairly quickly, as the eager students ran around campus putting up posters and distributing flyers as fast as possible. Now that Obama has been elected, it's not outrageous to say that the event had its intended effect. Hooray for late-night volunteerism!
