Variety Show: Nightingales, Traditions, and WHOA Hip-Hop Dance
November 19, 2009 at 10:57 amOn Saturday night, the Nightingales took the stage dressed in everything from bubble wrap to plastic bags to a black spandex catsuit with a fur collar. They sang their first song, TLC's "Unpretty", without any explanation of their bizarre garb, then eventually got around to explaining that in honor of their guests for the night, the Macalester Traditions, an all-male a capella group from Macalester College, they were dressed as Carleton traditions. These included Friday Flowers, Toff (the black catsuit), Heaven and Hell, the albino squirrel, and one girl who appeared to be dressed normally until she came up front and the rest of the Gales sang the opening notes of Like a Prayer.
Feed My Starving Children
November 18, 2009 at 2:21 pmWhat is it that Carleton students get up to when they engage in the community?
They might help a nonprofit organization package food that is going to be shipped to children in developing countries, for one thing, like at last weekend's Feed My Starving Children event.

Cujokra: Purgatory
November 12, 2009 at 11:13 amLast weekend, Evans held its traditional Heaven and Hell dance, where students can choose to party in Heaven or Hell. But wait: there’s that other place you can go, too. That would be Purgatory, according to Dante. Cujokra provided that third option for Carls who were not too naughty, but not too nice, either, with an improv show on Friday night. Unlike, well, Purgatory, students didn’t mind hanging around there for a while.

Western Archery Club
November 11, 2009 at 3:13 pmWe already know that Carleton is home to some pretty unusual student clubs. We’ve got Naginata Club, Moustache Club, Reformed Druids of North America, and so forth. It’s long said on the Student Orgs web page that we also have a Western Archery Club, but the group has been keeping a fairly low profile on campus.
Not any longer. Bill Brinkman ’12 and Michael Hanna ’12, this year’s co-presidents, have decided to pack Archery Club out of storage – literally.
Halloween 2009
November 9, 2009 at 1:57 pmHalloween fell on a Saturday this year, so Carleton students went all out to make sure it was a Halloween to remember.

Man vs. Language: Language Wins!
November 2, 2009 at 2:39 pmArika Okrent ’92 is a Carleton alumna and author of In the Land of Invented Languages: Esperanto Rock Stars, Klingon Poets, Loglan Lovers and the Mad Dreamers who tried to Build a Perfect Language. In true Carleton form, when she graduated from Carleton with a major in linguistics, she decided to study the languages that were so weird and exotic that the other linguists wouldn’t touch them: the made-up ones. Last week, she was happy to share her years of experience with us in a talk.

October 28, 2009 at 4:20 pmThe annual Carleton apple picking trip was a little while ago, but it's still fall, isn't it?
We still have an excuse to show beautiful photos of delicious-looking apples, right?
