In a surprise move, Carleton President Rob Oden announced this morning plans to convert the Bald Spot into a building to house the school's growing administration.  The building addresses a critical need Carleton will face in the coming years and has been funded by a generous donation by an anonymous alumnus.  "We need a great many more assistant deans and associate deans," says Oden, "and this building could house scores of them in the years ahead."

Although it will be necessary to remove all of the trees from the Bald Spot's surroundings, Carleton aims to earn a LEED platinum certification for the new building.  One of the plans for making the building more sustainable is to dig wells and power the building with geothermal energy.

Oden is enthusiastic about the plans for this new addition to Carleton campus.  "It's as if the Bald Spot had been waiting" for this building to arrive, he says.  For more information about Carleton's new administrative building, see Oden's video announcement.

Toff, Carleton's much-beloved campus cat, turns 13 today!  In honor of the occasion, there will be birthday cake served in both dining halls tonight (you make have noticed the Toff-themed cupcakes already available at the Snack Bar).  There is also a display of Toff's favorite books in the library.  These include such classics as Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Birdsong by the Seasons by Donald Kroodsma, and A Travel Guide for Reckless Hearts by N. M. Kelby.

Want to help out other rescue pets like Toff?  Come to Sayles Great Space until 3:00pm today to buy treats baked by Martha Paas, Toff's "owner."  All proceeds from the bake sale will go to the Humane Society.

A new publication is about to join the Carleton family.

Three Carleton seniors, Jon Carter '10, Andy Rooks '10, and Dan Lindvall '10, are putting together a blog called The Daily Knight that will aggregate news and opinions from a variety of sources on campus.  They envision it as an online one-stop-shopping site for Carletonian and Carl articles, event announcements, Twitter feeds, and student editorials.

Finals driving you nuts?  Don’t worry, the Carleton Moustache Club is there to spread hope and change for all with their State of the Moustache Address.  On Friday night at Late Night Breakfast, Blake Hansen ’10, president of the Moustache Club, addressed the Carleton community about current issues in the realm of facial hair.

It’s a Carleton tradition, 100 days before graduation, for the entire senior class to gather in Sayles en masse, march through campus and down Division Street, and then storm the Rueb ‘n’ Stein.  By now the Rueb sees this coming and offers $1 beer specials to the seniors.

Last Friday, the seniors did it again, hampering traffic on Division and generally seeming like a spectacle to the townies.  There are only 100 days until graduation?  That prospect is both exciting and terrifying to this senior.

Cujokra gave winter term one last hurrah last weekend so we students could enjoy some hilarity before bunkering down for finals.  The theme for their 9^th weekend improv-off: Comedy Sports.

Because it’s so remote, especially in the middle of winter, Farm House can seem like a mysterious place.  Are Farm House residents all Birkenstock-clad mountain men who grow their own food?  If they’re farther away from campus than Goodhue, how do they get to classes?  What do they do way over there?

As it turns out, the Farm House people are regular Carleton students who open their house up to the Carleton community for social events.  One of these events is the annual Farm House Art Show.

Pho, the infinitely innuendable dish.  Pho, pronounced “fuh,” not “foe” or “fah,” is a traditional beef-and-noodle soup that has widespread appeal in Vietnam.  And now Carleton College, thanks to the efforts of Tim Viet.

Last Tuesday’s “Who is Northfield?” panel discussion marked the culmination of the ACT Center’s annual series of civic engagement events.  Each year, the ACT center holds a series of discussions that seek to engage the college with the Northfield community.  This year’s theme was “Food: From Local to Global.”  Over the course of February, the ACT center held food-themed documentaries, panel discussions, talks with alumni who have gone into the food industry, and a tour of Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis.

The Queens of Comedy was founded last year as a group of female stand-up comedians who put on casual shows for audiences at the Cave. Since then, it has somehow metamorphosed into an entirely male group that puts on shows in Little Nourse and still calls itself the Queens of Comedy. This mildly absurd fact is in the same vein as a lot of the humor in the show they put on 4th weekend.
