Man vs. Language: Language Wins!
November 2, 2009 at 2:39 pmArika Okrent ’92 is a Carleton alumna and author of In the Land of Invented Languages: Esperanto Rock Stars, Klingon Poets, Loglan Lovers and the Mad Dreamers who tried to Build a Perfect Language. In true Carleton form, when she graduated from Carleton with a major in linguistics, she decided to study the languages that were so weird and exotic that the other linguists wouldn’t touch them: the made-up ones. Last week, she was happy to share her years of experience with us in a talk.
Apple Picking: A Short Shout Story with Pictures
October 28, 2009 at 4:20 pmThe annual Carleton apple picking trip was a little while ago, but it's still fall, isn't it?
We still have an excuse to show beautiful photos of delicious-looking apples, right?

Vogon Poetry Slam
October 28, 2009 at 2:39 pmWarning: reading about this event may be hazardous to your health. Vogon poetry, first described in Douglas Adams’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is so bad that it causes anybody unfortunate enough to listen to it to want to stuff their ears with mud. So why would the Science Fiction and Fantasy Alliance want to recreate this stuff?
St. Olaf Photo Tour
October 26, 2009 at 1:56 pmThe rumors about St. Olaf are true: the campus is full of drop-dead gorgeous ... buildings. Here's a photo tour of one senior's recent expedition to Carleton's mysterious sister college.
Quiz Bowl: Students vs. Faculty
October 21, 2009 at 2:11 pmYou know you’re at Carleton when the Academic Quiz Bowl team generates as much maize-and-blue excitement as the football team. And they deserve it. In 2007, Carleton won the undergraduate Quiz Bowl national championships.
Fabulous Interactive Show of Humans
October 19, 2009 at 3:05 pmJuggling FISH club has been in hibernation recently, keeping a low profile among the daunting smorgasbord of student clubs and organizations on campus. This year’s crop of juggling FISHes has decided to end that hibernation with a bang. Fourth week FISH put on a multi-talent talent show, the Fabulous Interactive Show of Humans, in collaboration with talented students from all over campus.
The Female Orgasm Takes Carleton By Storm
October 15, 2009 at 12:14 pmThe hands went up with surprising enthusiasm. "I've heard it's a myth." "I've heard some women can't have them." "I've heard you can run out." "I've heard it's totally awesome!" The huge, co-ed group of students that swarmed the Great Hall on Wednesday night was so excited to have a place to finally say what they'd been thinking about a topic that, in the outside world, remains taboo: the female orgasm.
The Illusion of Attention
October 12, 2009 at 3:47 pmSpring Rolls Night with CHS
October 12, 2009 at 2:20 pmAfter a good dusting of snow all morning and afternoon, the weather here at Carleton is about as far away from springtime as one can get. But it’s always the right time to enjoy spring rolls. Last Friday night the Coalition of Hmong Students (CHS) shared the deliciousness with the rest of us courtesy of Asia House’s kitchen.
Boiled in Lead
October 8, 2009 at 10:11 amLast week, the Minneapolis-based band Boiled in Lead swept through Carleton campus with its fusion of folk-music lyrics, rock beats, and funky humor. Described as “country music, from many different countries,” or “Celtodelic rock n’ reel,” Boiled in Lead takes traditional folk music from around the world and performs it with a drum set, an electric guitar, and – that’s right, folks – an electrified fiddle.
CROP to Stop Hunger
October 5, 2009 at 1:57 pmFor several years, the Chaplain’s Office has been participating in an interfaith event in the Northfield community to raise awareness about international poverty and hunger. Northfield’s CROP walk usually passes without much attention from Carleton students, so this year Sarah Prather ’11 and Mandie Grover ’12 decided to change that.
