With support from a Bush Leadership Fellowship, Laurel attended the Getty Museum Leadership Institute in Los Angeles in July 2004 to enhance her leadership skills in preparation for the College arts initiative and planning for a new campus art museum. During spring 2005 she traveled to college art museums throughout the Midwest and northeast to observe best practices and gather ideas on integrating art museum activity with undergraduate teaching and learning. Her leave concluded with a period of reading and reflection.

Liz worked on completing on-going research on performance of Carleton students with learning disabilties and studied strategies for supporting underprepared students.

Chris Clark

Chris has arranged a part-time leave (one day every other week) to complete an executive MBA at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.

Bruce Colwell

Bruce used his leave to review literature on higher education assessment and student affairs. He visited nine peer schools and began work on the 2004-05 student affairs division review.

Sam Demas

Leave: May-November 2005

Sam’s six-month leave was divided into two parts: a two-month leave without pay to walk the mountains of northern Greece and plan a Carleton Alumni Adventures walking tour of the area; and a four-month leave to study library architecture and design through visits to outstanding European and American libraries, reading, attending conferences, and meeting with architects. He also used his leave to design the new Carleton course, "Expanding the Carleton Library".

Dennis Easley

Dennis took two days off each week to study art/architecture history and landscape design at the University of Minnesota. His studies on the creative process continue to inform the way he approaches landscape projects at Carleton.

Kathleen Foley
Director of Development Services / Acting Director of Prospect Research
Leave: July-September 2000

Kathleen used her leave to update her 1990 master’s degree work on the ethics of prospect research in light of the tremendous growth in Web research resources. She also traveled to Ireland, working for four weeks at the University of Limerick Foundation. Kathleen published a paper on her research findings for the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement journal and gave a presentation at an international conference.

Carolyn Fure-Slocum

Leave: Fall 2003

Carolyn took a three-month leave with her family in Oslo, Norway, where her husband Eric was teaching American history under the auspices of a Fulbright fellowship. While there, Carolyn did research on young adult religious and ethical development, read some new theological works that are relevant to college life in this era, and rejuvenated her own spiritual practices.

Helena Kaufman

Helena researched the European Language Portfolio, its theoretical framework, language pedagogy, cultural and political implications, and practical implementation at the high school and university levels.

Paula Lackie
Academic Computing Coordinator for Social Sciences and Humanities
Leave: Winter 2006

Paula used her 3-month leave to research social science data archives and learn about their role in social science education. She interviewed or worked with 40 archivists, educators, and technical people at 10 different archives, universities, and academic departments. She also gave presentations on Carleton’s Quirk program and other numeracy programs in U.S. higher education. Paula’s travel was partially supported by some of the sites she visited: the Economic and Social Data Service of the UK, the Finnish Social Science Data Archive, Universidad Pompeu Fabre (Barcelona), the Center for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences at Fundación Juan March (Madrid), and the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (University of Michigan). Her research helped build some new relationships in Europe that will benefit Carleton’s off-campus study programs in the social sciences and humanities.

Carolyn Sanford

Carolyn used her leave to research emerging online learning opportunities, analyze Carleton’s professional leave process, and focus on changes in her professional duties.

Tim Vick
Technical Director in Geology
Leave: 1999-2000

Tim visited international off-campus program sites (the SEA Semester and the Carleton Italy Program) and took a geology trip to Iceland. After directing the logistical work for Carleton’s geology field trips for 30 years, he says it was very helpful to learn how these two successful off-campus programs operate and get a feel for the total immersion experience that students receive in off-campus programs.
