Staff At Carleton – January 9, 2007
Hill Lounge – 10:30 a.m.

Present: Co-chairs Linda Irrthum and Jennifer Cox Johnson, Vicki Burgess, Gloria Heinz, Carolyn Soule, Patty Olson, Linda Mueller, Nance Nytes, Kris Peterson, Robbie Groth, Christine Krejci, Jeanne Estrem, Becky Krogh, Nancy Loesch, Patt Germann, and Fred Rogers.

The meeting was called to order by co-chairs Jennifer Cox Johnson and Linda Irrthum.

Minutes of the November 9, 2006, meetings were approved.

Updates from SAC College Representatives:

§ College Council and Budget Committee – Cris Jensen - committees have not met since the last SAC meeting.

§ Benefits – Becky Krogh - no report: committee has not met.

Updates from SAC Committees:

§ SAC Salary and Benefits – Linda Mueller - noted that Kathy Cooper has resigned from this committee. A new member is needed. The next issue to be addressed will be movement within salary ranges. Linda mentioned she learned from some statistics from HR that approximately half of the bi-weekly staff are above the mid-range of their salary range for their grade. That said, there is still a number of staff with 15-20+ years at the bottom of their range. This committee will be meeting after January 15, when Carol Spessard returns.

§ SAC Special Projects and Events – Noel Ponder, not present.

§ Staff Development – Christine Krejci noted the possibility of a tour of the middle school facility later in spring.

§ SAC Web site Development – Carolyn Soule - some SAC members attended ITS workshops over break and spoke about the possibility of updating the SAC website.

§ Follow-up on SAC/Forum retreat – Kris Peterson - 167 were registered for the retreat. Topic well received. President Oden’s presence lent credence to topic/issue. Volunteers were sought at the end of the retreat for a new committee to consider implementation of ideas brought forward at the retreat.

§ Vice President Fred Rogers reported on the vacation accrual policy which will be presented to the Board of Trustees. Suggested changes for consideration by the Trustees are that the third week of vacation will start accruing at the end of the 5th year of employment and the 4th week will start accruing at the end of the 10th year (change from the end of the 12th year). The use of vacation prior to actual accrual was mentioned but will be a future discussion.

§ Fred requested SAC have a representative on the search committee for the replacement for Bonnie-Jean Mork’s position. Co-chairs Linda and Jennifer asked for volunteers to contact them.

§ In response to the inquiry about having a SAC representative on the Arts Planning Committee, Fred noted that the first phase of planning is complete with the report to be submitted immediately, and that the current committee will basically cease to function soon. In the spring another committee/group will form to choose an architect. SAC may request to have a member serve at that time.

§ It was noted that Cinema and Media studies will be a new major at Carleton and that Arabic is a new language to be offered.

*Meeting with Forum update:

§ Jennifer Cox Johnson and Linda Irrthum attended. There is a Career Center “crawl” planned for Monday, February 5, 9-10:30 a.m. More information is forthcoming.

*Report on Ann Lamppa’s meeting with the library staff regarding disability services – Vicki Burgess. Ann is willing to work with any department/group on campus to inform about available services for people with any sort of disability. It was suggested this may be a good topic for the development committee to pursue as a session for

staff.

*Miscellaneous Update by Co-chair Linda Irrthum. It was noted that Jill Tollefson will represent SAC on the accreditation committee, with Nicky Lamberty as alternate.

The “Annual Report of Catastrophic Leave Sharing Program (CLSP)” prepared by Human Resources was available at the meeting and is also attached to these minutes.

The next SAC meeting is scheduled for February 8, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. in Hill Lounge.

Next News and Views – January 18, noon to 1 p.m., Sayles-Hill 252.

Upcoming events and minutes of past meetings are available at http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/staff/sac/.

Respectfully submitted,
Patt Germann
