October 21, 2004
Clem Shearer Dining Room, LDC

Present: Lorie Tuma, Patt Germann, Tammy Anderson, Kathy Cooper, Robbie Groth, Jean Hayes, Christine Krejci, Candy Lelm, Tami Little, Nancy Loesch, Linda Mueller, Vonnie Otte, Kris Peterson, Noel Ponder, Sandy Saari, Carolyn Soule, Carol Spessard, Melissa Thomas, Diethelm Prowe, faculty representative

The meeting was brought to order by Lorie Tuma (co-chair). Stephanie Huston (co-chair) was absent. The Sept. 23, 2004 SAC minutes were approved and posted on the SAC website (http://webapps.acs.carleton.edu/campus/staff)

Lorie reported having met with Fred Rogers, the new administrative representative to SAC. He has indicated an interest in learning more about the goals of SAC., and has asked to introduce himself at the SAC luncheon on Nov. 8. Lorie mentioned a new opportunity now available to meet Fred called “Fridays with Fred” in Great Space on Oct. 29, Nov. 12, Dec. 3 and 17. This is a time for anyone to visit with him about concerns or issues. This information is also posted on the SAC website.

Committee Reports:

Fall luncheon:

Vonnie Otte reported that fall luncheon invitations have been sent to all non-exempt staff members. Response in a timely manner is encouraged by all. Eric Hilleman will be the keynote speaker, discussing his new book on Laurence Gould.

College Council:

Jean Hayes reported that College Council is forming a sub-committee to review the

motor vehicle policy and is seeking a non-exempt staff representative. Christine Krejci indicated she would like to know more about it for possible membership. The current policy can be found on-line under the Student Handbook.

Website committee:

Carolyn Soule discussed the SAC website, and the location of training sessions, opportunities and meetings on the website. To submit items for inclusion on the website, attach items to an email for Carolyn at csoule@carleton.edu. Ideas are always welcome!

Publications:

Patt Germann reported that bookmarks have been made for distribution at the fall luncheon, and that she and Nikki Lamberty are working on a new draft of the SAC insert for the orientation packet, given to new staff members through Human Resources.

Staff Development:

The Committee has been working with the Payroll Office to schedule a timesheet training session at the direction of the SAC group. The timecard training for non-supervisory personnel has been scheduled to take place at the session on FLSA regulations on Nov. 2 at 1:30 in SH 251. It was suggested that the timecard training portion of that session should be at least one hour in length and that perhaps a larger space should be scheduled, as attendance is expected to be high.

[Notice: Since the meeting, it was determined that there would not be sufficient time at the FLSA training scheduled for Nov. 2. Therefore, an independent Timecard Training Session has been scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Alumni Guest House Meeting Room.]

By-laws:

The committee is determining how to approach the issue of revising by-laws to make them more “user-friendly” for members. Sandi Saari said the committee has some questions they would like to have answered. Christine Krejci indicated that there are many forms of leadership, and that SAC will need to decide by vote, what they believe to be the best format for the Committee.

Old business:

Linda Mueller told the group that the issue of serving as an Election Judge will be classified as “civic duty” on timesheets. Minnesota Statutes indicates that employees will not be penalized while serving as an Election Judge. Those serving will turn over their civic pay to the College in order to receive their Carleton wage for the day they serve. This information will be included in the Staff Handbook.

New business:

Attention was called to an issue regarding a new hire in the Central Records office. The issue is whether the position was properly advertised.

Lorie remembered Joyce Selover, who died from cancer, while working at Carleton. Joyce’s funeral was held Tuesday, October 15. Joyce will be remembered as a warm and caring individual by all she came into contact with.

Informational presentation:

Mike Hendel of the Career Center gave an overview on behavior-based interviewing, and the costs of interviewing and training new employees. Workshops are offered to students at Carleton to help them prepare their resumes, interviewing and presentation skills. Staff may also attend workshops presented by the Career Center.

The next SAC Meeting will be on Thursday, November 11, at 1:30 a.m. in Hill Lounge.
