Ah, satisfaction from the feel of good dirt sifting between your toes in Carleton’s garden plot. As Farm Interns for the summer, we have that opportunity every day! This year, Carleton’s garden was at least tripled in size, now totaling about three-quarters of an acre (including an satellite plot behind the baseball fields just for squash). In the garden, we boast 420 tomato plants, 120 pepper plants, and more than 600 squash plants not to mention a multitude of other vegetables and herbs. Besides expanding, we have been able to install a reusable drip tape irrigation system just this week that will be both efficient and save us interns a ridiculous amount of time. Hooray! With the garden we expect to be able to harvest nearly 3 metric tons of produce, all of which will be locally sold to Bon Appétit for use in Carleton’s dinning halls and the company’s catered meals. Come out and visit us at the garden sometime!
