What Can You Do?
• Turn down your thermostat – it is one of the most effective steps you can take aside from building better-insulated buildings that use passive solar heating.
• Take shorter showers or use a gentler spray to cut down on hot water usage.
• Hang-dry your clothes, or dry on a low heat setting.
• Turn off computers in labs if few students are around. Desktops use 3-4 kilowatt-hours per day if left on.
• Join the discussion in favor of green buildings. Personal conservation will have a limited effect given that 80% of electricity is used in academic/facilities buildings.
• Classrooms have efficient fluorescent lights, but they have a lot of them. For instance, the a room in Upper Sayles has 72 fluorescent tubes (totaling 2300 watts). So turn off the lights if you are the last one in a room!
