Goals
In 2007, President Robert Oden signed the American College and University President's Climate Commitment. As the College is now committed to taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately striving to achieve carbon neutrality, our modes of transportation must be addressed.
There are, in general, four ways in which to reduce the global warming impacts of our transportation patterns: by investing in more efficient technology, by conserving the number of miles we travel and the mode by which we travel, by shaping College policies to foster sustainable behaviors, and by purchasing offsets for that travel that cannot be avoided.
Technology
- Incorporate clean, fuel-efficient technologies into College-owned vehicle fleet (hybrids, electric vehicles, biofuels)
Conservation
- Reduce vehicle miles traveled
- Initiate and support a ride sharing and/or car sharing program
- Encourage non-motorized or public transportation options
College Policies
- Institute policies that encourage use of shared/public transportation
- Discourage individual vehicle ownership and transportation
Offsets
- For that travel which is unavoidable, purchase carbon offsets in compliance with the Presidents' Climate Commitment
- Determine the veracity of offset vendor claims
- If possible, work with vendors that support local or regional renewable energy projects
