Student Organizations
Working on Carleton-specific issues
- Students Organization for the Protection of the Environment (SOPE): A group dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and activism on campus and in the community and to providing opportunities for environment volunteering. Among our past projects are Earth Week preparations and activity organization, starting the Adopt-A-River program on campus, bringing environmental speakers, and starting a composting program at Carleton.
- Food Truth: An organization dedicated to raising food consciousness by examining the environmental, political, social and ethical impacts of what we eat. Food Truth organizes events, speakers, community dinners, films, workshops, and field trips to encourage discussion and advocacy around food-related issues.
- Farm Club: A student organization affiliated with Farmhouse, Farm Club runs a community organic garden and promotes sustainable agriculture.
Activism outside the Carleton bubble
- MPIRG: (Minnesota Public Interest Research Group): A state-wide non-profit activism group with local chapters on campuses throughout the state. Campus chapters are composed of a student group and a state board organizing director.
- Engineers Without Borders (EWB): EWB works to implement engineering projects that are both environmentally and economically sustainable. Past projects have included building high altitude greenhouses and irrigation in Ccapacmachay, Peru; constructing a biodiesel reactor to convert waste vegetable oil into usable biodiesel fuel.
Volunteer-based organizations
- Adopt-a-Highway: An ACT program where volunteers spend part of a weekend afternoon cleaning up a two-mile stretch of Highway 35.
- Adopt-a-River: An ACT program where volunteers spend part of a weekend afternoon cleaning up Northfield’s Cannon River.
- Arbor: An ACT program devoted to learning about the environment while aiding in the restoration and cleanup of the Carleton Cowling Arboretum and McKnight Prairie.
- Kids for Conservation: A volunteer student organization teaching environmental education in the Northfield elementary schools.
Nature/outdoor-oriented
- CANOE (Carleton Association of Nature and Outdoor Enthusiasts): A student organization that runs a variety of student led trips and activities, as well as lending outdoor equipment.
Interest houses
- Farm House: A campus interest house dedicated to sustainable living. All welcome to dinners Mon-Thurs 6:30pm.
