Student Wellness Advisors
The Student Wellness Advisors are Carleton students who are part of the Wellness Center team. Through workshops and advising, SWAs assist in educating and supporting members of the Carleton community in making healthy choices. The SWAs have a wide variety of topics they are trained to talk about including sexual health, sexual harassment and assault, alcohol and drug use, stress management, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, relaxation, and other topics. Though the ongoing training process is designed to ensure that SWAs are excellent private (not confidential) sources for consultation or information, they are also linked to the many other peer leaders and resources around campus and are therefore qualified to make excellent referrals. Many SWA referrals are made to (confidential) medical and mental health professionals at the Wellness Center. SWAs work closely with and are supervised by TWC's staff during training, and while producing materials or programs that are about wellness topics.
Traditionally, there are a number of projects that SWAs produce every term; some of these projects are kept up throughout the year.
- SWA Stalls/Bulletin Boards: There are two designated SWA Stalls (one male, one female) on every floor of every freshman dorm; there is also a bulletin board in each of the upperclassmen dorms (Sevy, Parrish, Evans, Memorial) and Sayles. Both formats are designed to give students access to a variety of information about wellness and the Wellness Center.
- Facts of the Week (FOW) and SWArticles in the Carletonian (look under "Weekly Updates"): Every Friday during the term, a Co-SWA pair (see the SWA Directory) publishes information on a wellness-related topic or event. The FOW is posted in SWA stalls and on this website.
- Active and Passive Programs, such as:
- Get Drunk with Your SWAs: This is a simulation of a Carleton party with a rootbeer keg and a lot of fun. A brief discussion about alcohol follows the party.
- Let’s Talk about Sex: Learn about the importance of safer sex/abstinence thorough learning about STIs, birth control and relationships.
- Relax and Enjoy: This SWA workshop includes methods of relaxation, ways to make stress relieving tools and the importance of taking time for yourself.
- All-Hall and All-Campus Programs:
- All-Hall Programs are conducted simultaneously by SWAs in every Freshman dorm across campus. For example, information on the nutritional content of foods available in the dining hall was presented in an interactive program during the dinner hour. SWAs stationed themselves in an entrance to the dorm and asked their residents questions about nutrition.
- All-Campus Programs are designed to reach out to the entire campus. Often, these programs involve a big event or poster series about a particular topic. For example, the SWAs work to put on an event (This is My Story) and produce a poster series about Disabilities Awareness Month.
