Alcohol and Drugs

Current surveys at Carleton indicate that alcohol is the drug of choice. This corresponds with nationwide statistics illustrating that alcohol is one of the most frequently used psychoactive drugs. Because of the variety and unpredictability of behavior associated with alcohol consumption, its use involves substantial risk.

The college social environment and Carleton’s unique social interactions offer a wide distribution of opinions on the subject of alcohol use. Although over 50% of students drink, many of them do not participate in binge drinking. However, you will probably know someone who choosees to participate in these activities. It is also likely that you have not been presented with the same kinds of social opportunities that lend themselves to drinking as you will at Carleton, and most likely, you will not have the same type of experience after you graduate. As freshmen, you will be confronted, perhaps for the first time, with the serious responsibilities that drinking involves, or as upperclassmen, you will continue to seek your own balance of drinking. You will have to make decisions that could have a serious impact both long and short term, on your health, relationships, and academics.

It is important to consider all the factors contributing to your decisions about alcohol use. Only you can decide what is best in your situation, however this page is intended to provide you with education on the consequences drinking can have on your mental and physical health, the state laws and college policy surrounding the issue, and the resources that are available to you.
