Alcohol: What Ifs
What would happen if . . .
drink underage?
It depends on where you are and your behavior. If the Northfield Police become involved, you will most likely get a ticket for underage drinking and have to settle it through the county legal system. If you are in your residence hall room and you don’t drink to excess and don’t cause any problem, then most likely, nothing will happen. Although Carleton students can and do exercise all sorts of personal freedoms and choices, the College prohibits underage drinking. Carleton is an incorporated, legal entity that must abide by and promote compliance with the law (See the College's alcohol policy). Our primary point of emphasis and intervention, however, is alcohol-related behavior that negatively impacts on a student's health or well-being and/or the health, well-being and/or rights of others.
Get totally wasted?
Most likely you will feel awful, make a spectacle of yourself, probably throw up and lose a fair amount of respect. Getting totally wasted could also lead to unintended negative consequences of a sexual nature. (See questions below) Your friends, neighbors and RA will probably notice this behavior. Depending just how outlandish your behavior, your hall director and Security will also hear about it. If you violate College policy or State law with your behavior you will be subject to disciplinary procedures or legal proceedings.
Throw up in the hallway, bathroom or my room?
You will be responsible for cleaning it up. If you don’t clean it up in a timely manner or one of your friends doesn’t do it for you, you will be fined $25. The College provides spill kits for you or your friends to clean up the mess.
Punch somebody while drunk?
You will probably get that "somebody" mad at you and possibly get yourself hurt. Punching somebody is a violation of College policy so you will have to deal with the College judicial system. Being drunk doesn’t release you from being responsible for your actions.
Take a sexual liberty while under the influence?
As was stated above, being drunk doesn’t release you from being responsible for your behavior. You will be subject to the College Policy on Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence and/or Policies Against Sexual Misconduct.
Get hauled off to Detox by the NPD?
You will spend the night there and most likely get charged with violating the law on public intoxication and, thus, end up in court.
Overdose on alcohol?
In addition to what we said about getting wasted, we read this question as meaning that you have jeopardized your immediate health. If you are lucky, someone will help you get to the hospital and, if need be, you'll be put on a monitor to keep you breathing and your heart pumping until you can again do these bodily functions on your own. It is important to know that an overdose of alcohol can be lethal.
Will my name show up on a Security report?
This means that the Dean of Students, administrators in Residential Life, your hall director and RAs will find out about what was reported. If your actions are a violation of College policy, you can expect to meet with one of these individuals.
Think I have a serious alcohol/other drug problem?
If you think that you do, you may voluntarily go to The Wellness Center for a Chemical Health Screening. The chemical health screener will assist you in determining your relationship with alcohol or drugs and provide you with a variety of options.
I am concerned about a friend?
Talk with your RA, hall director, class dean or staff person in The Wellness Center. Please continue to be that person’s friend; they need you. Sometimes being a good friend means you have to try to assist them in getting help even if they say they don’t want it. However, once you have consulted with someone from the College, be ready to back away and let the College resource help.
Get raped while I am under the influence?
Contact a member of CAASHA, a SWA, an RA or the Wellness Center. It is important that you get help immediately. Any of these resources can offer you support and guidance.
