Carleton College

Student Insurance

Carleton College is invested in the health and welfare of our students. Consequently, we require all enrolled students to have health insurance. Those students not covered by a family policy are required to enroll in the Carleton College sponsored Accident & Sickness Plan. The College will be working with Collegiate Insurance Resources (800-513-3788). In general, the cost of the plan is $637 for the year (Aug. 15, 2009 to Aug. 15, 2010). Most benefits are paid at 80% after the one-time $100 deductible.

Please consider the following issues when choosing between the available options for 2009-2010.

  • First, health service beyond general diagnosis of illness and treatment of minor accidents provided by The Wellness Center is not included in the comprehensive fee of the College. Specifically, all lab, x-ray, most pharmaceuticals, office visits and specialist referrals at the local health clinics/hospital are billed to your insurance company.
  • Second, many home-based HMO plans do not provide adequate coverage outside of your home area. If you are considering study abroad options, these may not be covered under your current policy. The College strongly recommends that families, prior to waiving participation in the Student Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan, review their health insurance policies to ensure that their coverage provides equal or better benefits and that they are covered in the Northfield, MN area.

Highlights of the insurance plan include:

  • One annual physical per year (NEW this year)
  • Prescription card through Medco Health with copays of $10 generic and $20 name brand, which has a $500 per condition maximum
  • Covers cost of some immunizations
  • Deductible waived with a Wellness Center staff referral to an off-campus provider

Two options exist for you in securing health insurance. We require one of the following:

1. You may continue coverage that you currently have through your family (you must complete a waiver form online.)

2. You may purchase insurance through the College (you must complete an enrollment form online.)

Insurance waivers or enrollment must be completed by July 15th or the premium of $637 will be automatically added to your fall term tuition bill.

For those of you who are considering Division III sanctioned athletics, the Carleton Athletic Department does not carry a supplemental insurance policy for injuries sustained through athletic participation. Each student-athlete is required to provide acknowledgement of athletic injury insurance of at least $75,000. THIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ATHLETIC INSURANCE MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE ATHLETES ARE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE. You may complete the acknowledgement form online. If you do not currently have such insurance you may purchase the coverage through the College by completing an enrollment form online Please review your current health insurance policy to see if you would be covered.

For those of you who are considering club sport participation, the Recreation Department does not carry a supplemental insurance policy for injuries sustained through club participation. The basic Carleton student policy only covers the first $500 of club sport injury. If you require additional coverage you may purchase the coverage through the College by completing an enrollment form online. Please review your current health insurance policy to see if you would be covered.
