Accountability in Higher Ed:
How does Carleton participate in the national conversation?

Almost daily, we read items in the press about No Child Left Behind, the Spellings Commission's recommendations, proposed changes in accreditation, national standards for higher education—what does all of this mean for Carleton?

This fall, faculty and staff are invited to three discussion sessions at Headley House to consider background readings, relevant news of the day, and on-campus preparation for our accreditation process. How does Carleton define quality? What kind of evidence do we offer our students, parents, trustees, and ourselves? How do we recognize success as well as problems that need attention?

All meetings will be held on Thursdays at Headley House, from 4:30-6 p.m.: September 27, October 11, and October 25. We will be joined at the final session by Bill Condon of Washington State University, a longtime friend of Carleton and nationally-recognized authority on quality measures for higher education.

Faculty Workshop: Using Numbers to Make Better Arguments*

Following the success of “WAC with Numbers: An Exploratory Workshop on Helping Students Use Quantitative Data in Disciplinary or Civic Argument” in 2005, QuIRK and the Writing Program have invited John Bean, Professor of English and Consulting Professor of Writing and Assessment at Seattle University to return for a second workshop. Participants will explore ways to invite students to use quantitative reasoning to make more precise, convincing, and even passionate arguments. All faculty who assign writing are invited; honoraria will be awarded to faculty attending all three days of the workshop. Abundant food, collegiality, and one of the coveted Writing Program pens are all included.
