Bio:

I am a scientist working at a private, non-profit research institution, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Insititution (WHOI). My role is similar to that of a professor at a research university (I teach a bit, I have graduate students), but more of my time is spent writing grants and conducting research than teaching. My scientific interests lie in understanding volcanic eruptions in the oceans (where more than 2/3 of the Earth's volcanism takes place). To do this, I use submersibles to go to the deep sea to make maps, collect rocks and animals for analysis, and make observations. In addition to my role as a scientific researcher, I serve as the Chief Scientist for Deep Submergence. WHOI operates three many deep-diving vehicles for the scientific community including the human-occupied submersible Alvin, the remotely-operated vehicle Jason, and the autonomous underwater vehicle Sentry. My role is to guide the development and use of these vehicles from the scientific perspective (i.e., not engineering) and liaise with the community of users, sponsors, and the public.
