Alumni & Friends Make International Internships Possible

June 16, 2009
By Brad Kmoch, Program Coordinator

International internships and volunteer opportunities are often unpaid—an obstacle for participation by students who can't afford to do unpaid work during their summers and breaks. But thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of Carleton, more students than ever are able to volunteer for these incredible opportunities around the globe.

Since the summer of 2004, these two programs established through gifts to the College have funded more than 75 students in internships and service work worldwide:

Initiative for Service Internships in International Development

Stephen R. West, '53 and his wife Phyllis M. West established the Initiative for Service Internships in International Development in honor of the members of the Class of 1953 at its Fiftieth Reunion.  The Initiative is intended to support internships for Carleton students who perform volunteer service in the areas of international community development, including credit and business cooperatives, public wellness and treatment, literacy and education, and other public services in developing countries.

The internships provide Carleton students with valuable experiences outside the classroom, with a desire to motivate them to consider careers in international service.

Newman Language Awards

The family and friends of Richard T. Newman ’49 established a fund for Language Study Internships that are intended to support and encourage Carleton students to pursue internships in foreign countries that can lead to career opportunities in the field of foreign languages.

Impact of The Programs

The impact of these programs is best described by the students receiving the awards. See videos of 2008 participants reflecting on their experiences.
