Carleton Alumni Mentoring Program (C.A.M.P.)
Background/General Information
The impetus for this program is based on two success stories:
- A Milwaukee college preparatory school hands its students, in the fall of their senior year in college, five 3" x 5" index cards, with the names of an alumnus/alumna (and contact information) on each card, as they say, “These alumni are expecting a call from you and they are committed to mentoring you into graduate school or employment by the time you complete your bachelor’s degree.”
- Interns at Yankee Magazine are assigned a senior executive responsible for mentoring their rising college senior interns into graduate study or employment in the industry, except positions at Yankee are disallowed—the purpose is to attract new talent to the industry.
Program Content
- Alumni volunteers for this program are matched with seniors during their junior year spring term and provide coaching and mentoring through graduation the following June.
- Email, phone, and video communications ensue across the year, with one face-to-face planning session held either on campus, at the mentor’s location, or at a neutral site.
- Mentor and student together complete and sign off on an agreement outline by October 1.
