Alumni volunteers for this program are matched with seniors near the beginning of their fall term and provide coaching and mentoring through graduation the following June. Electronic, telephonic, and televideo communications ensue across the year. Alumni mentor and student together complete and sign off on a mentoring and correspondence agreement outline by mid-term.
Volunteers provide:
- general career advice/resume review/practice interviews
- informational interviews with others in the field
- networking opportunities and advice, especially referrals as appropriate
- professional development suggestions
- constructive criticism, including praise as well as specific suggestions for improvement
- assistance with developing a professional or career “plan” and establishing realistic and obtainable goals
Why it’s helpful:
- helps students learn about specific professions
- encourages and motivates students to develop individual knowledge/skills through specific, constructive feedback
- assists in career planning and helps hold students accountable to tasks/goals in job search
- develops networking and interpersonal skills
