Carleton Class of 1960 - Developing Civic Leaders Nonprofit Internship Fund

Purpose: The Career Center is pleased to announce the Carleton Class of 1960: Developing Civic Leaders Nonprofit Internship Fund.  The Class of 1960 Fund provides a stipend for students to pursue unpaid/low paying summer internships which class members have prospected and provided.

Carleton Class of 60: Developing Civic Leaders grew out of a community service panel held at the Class of 1960’s 45th Reunion in June of 2005.  After hearing classmates talk about the challenges and rewards of making a difference through their work with nonprofits, the group decided to introduce this opportunity to today’s Carleton undergraduates.  Over the last seven years, they did this by identifying nonprofit summer internships in organizations involved in bringing about systemic change in individuals and/or in their communities and acting as mentors to those students chosen for the positions.  Carleton Class of 60 was modeled after Princeton Project 55 (www.project55.org). Carleton Class of 60 also joined The Alumni Network (TAN), made up of some 25 colleges and universities.

The Gift Committee of the Class of 60’s 50th Reunion Planning Committee has designated a part of their Class Gift to the Career Center to begin a Carleton Nonprofit Internship Fund, to which classmates may continue to contribute.  While the Class of 1960 established the current fund, the Class affirms the possibility that in the future, a permanent endowment may be established through additional planned outright gifts to support internships in perpetuity.

The fund is intended to assist with the financial obligations incurred by students who gain experience by working in professional settings.  Students who receive Carleton financial assistance are to be given priority in award considerations. The class hopes that the host organization will also have “a significant financial stake in the students’ stipends” if at all possible.

Placements for Summer 2012: For more information on each internship site and to apply, go to the “Tunnel”.

  • Denver Kids, Inc., Denver, CO: Denver Kids helps Denver Public Schools students, grades K-12, who face the personal challenges of higher risk environments, successfully complete high school, pursue post-secondary options and become productive members of the community.
  • Face to Face Health and Counseling Service, Inc. (Face to Face), St. Paul, MN:  Face to Face offers integrated mental health, medical, and case management services to youth and families in our community clinic. Face to Face provides services specifically to homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth through our drop-in center, Safezone, the only drop-in center for homeless youth in Ramsey County.
  • Delancey Street, San Francisco, CA: Delancey Street is the country's leading residential self-help organization for former substance abusers, ex-convicts, homeless and others who have hit bottom. Residents at Delancey Street range from teenagers to senior citizens, and include men and women and all races and ethnicities.

Funding:  A stipend of up to $3,000 for an 8 – 10 week internship (June, July and 2 weeks in August).  Award amount will be at the discretion of the selection committee. The stipend will be paid in two installments, the first payment at the beginning of the internship and the balance paid when the internship is complete. Two items are required for the internship to be “completed” and to trigger the final payment. First, a one page essay on what the student actually learned from the internship, (which will be sent to the Class of 1960 members which have sponsored the internship), and a work evaluation of the student by the work supervisor.

Eligibility:

·         Internships are intended for students to use during their summer break.

·         Preference is for second- and third-year students.

·         All applicants must be in good academic standing.

·         Seniors are not eligible to apply.

Application Checklist:

·         Fill out the Class of 60 Cover Sheet (form can be downloaded here or from the document library in the "Tunnel.")

·         Submit a resume.

·         Submit a short essay (no more than one page, 12 pt. type, single spaced) on what you expect to learn from an internship with a nonprofit organization involved in bringing about systemic change in individuals and/or in their communities.

·         Unofficial transcript (Request electronic copy through the HUB). IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT TRANSCRIPTS: The transcript files that students get from the registrar contain a lot of extra code, links, etc. that make for a document that’s too large to upload to the Tunnel. The best way to get around this is to do one of the following:

1) Scan a hard copy of the transcript and then upload it to your Document file in the Tunnel. If you don't have access to a scanner you can stop by the Career Center and use our scanner. It's real quick and easy. You simply make a copy of the transcript and the photocopier creates a normal-sized pdf file that is automatically emailed to you. Then, you can upload it to the Tunnel.

2) You can go to the Hub and do a screen capture of your transcript, then upload it to the Tunnel. To do a screen capture you simply press the Alt + PrtScn keys, then paste into a Word document. Since Alt + PrtScn only captures what is visible on the screen, you may have to scroll down and do additional screen captures until you've got the entire transcript.
