Carls petition on behalf of jailed transgender woman

Over the summer, Heather Yang ’12 heard a story from a friend that made her blood boil and changed her perspective on Minnesota’s legal system.  “My friend told me about Chrishaun ‘CeCe’ McDonald, a black transwoman, [who] was walking to Cub Foods one night when drunk white supremacists hurled racist comments at her, and then violently attacked her,” Yang said.

    • Women’s Basketball bested at Augsburg

Skylar Tsutsui ‘15 tallied a team-best 16 points as four players finished in double figures for the Carleton College women’s basketball team, but the Knights shot just 27 percent in the second half and lost 65-61 at Augsburg College.

    • Women finish fourth

Iowa?  What could there possibly be in Iowa? Well, as it turns out there are some very nice track and field facilities, as well as some really fast runners.

    • Men set track records

The Men’s Track team family finishes most workouts at the Rec Center to the tune of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain.”  The runners, jumpers and throwers took Adele’s words to heart as they set fire to the track Saturday at Grinnell College.

Women's team seeks to continue streak of top three finishes

The Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team has finished in the top three at the MIAC Championships every year since 1995. Several Knights will need to perform at a top level for that streak to continue.

Men’s Basketball defeated by Augsburg at home

Sometimes the tighter you grip something, the more it slips away. That was the case on senior night in West Gymnasium, where despite a stellar performance from senior Michael Grinnell suffered a 63-49 loss to Augsburg College.

      Seatbelts and safety nets

“You only get mad at a seatbelt when you’re not getting into an accident.”  It’s a great metaphor for the major, and I think it’s one that’s worth exploring further.

On all the wonderful things that can be done with almonds

Valentine’s Day, like Christmas and birthdays, can be a bummer for those of us trying to avoid wheat flour—and by that I mean pretty much every type of baked good that crops up around these times of year.

Self-imposed distractions: the value of traditions

When 365 days pass by from the day a person is born, it is custom to bake them a large, light the cake with candles on top, and sing a song entitled, "happy birthday." These ways of life happen mechanically, injected into the human mind from birth. It is how humans cope; it is how they feel a part of something.

The end is near...pondering 8th week

Even as every single student on this campus picks up more and more reading, gets more and more tired, skips more and more showers and tears out more and more of their hair, the campus itself, as a whole, still functions somehow.

Technology in academia: embracing educational innovation

We use technology because it’s technology. I think there’s something deeply wrong with that. Notice how when I said technology you immediately knew what I was thinking about: new electronics.

College rankings as a marketing tool in line with Carleton’s values?

It’s troubling to think that we can somehow quantify the teaching that goes on here, and publicizing our ranking rides completely against our campus ethos. Interestingly, the Office of Admissions has written a nice piece saying college rankings don’t matter

      ArbNotes

Two weeks ago, Arb naturalists were joined by retired Arb Manager Myles Bakke for a winter turkey tracking outing, but it was also the first time I bore witness to some remodeling undertaken by a family of beavers.
