Joyous whooping is a staple of any good river plunge, but next time try holding your hollering for a moment.  Approach the bank slowly and quietly, scan the sunny spots on the bank, and you might find something truly worth screaming about: one or more of the Arb’s four species of turtles.

If you open a window or step outside and listen carefully, pausing for a moment to filter out shouts, laughter, music, and cars, you’ll hear a different Carleton soundtrack.
The past few weeks the chorus has been growing; voices swelling and filling the evening air near ponds, drainage ditches, rivers, and creeks.

You know that spring has finally arrived when colorful warblers can be seen flitting through the trees of the Arb. The spring bird migration is one of the more amazing feats of endurance that occurs in nature.

  • Weekly Recipe: Salmon Salad (Login Required)

The one two punch of the flavor and texture in this recipe is just fantastic. The raspberry vinegar adds a whole other dimension to the salmon, and serving it cold (ish) really seems to bring out the crunchiness of the salad and keep the light and airy feeling.

Guess what, Carleton? It’s still winter outside. Although it might be wearing on you, the winter is still a great time to get out and enjoy the Arb.

  • Cold Weather Cure: Mushroom and Stilton Galette (Login Required)

Mushroom and Stilton Galette I particularly like this recipe as the porcini flavor really is allowed to take the driver’s seat, and paired with the creaminess of the filling, thanks in large degree to the stilton, it matches perfectly with a nice buttery, flakey crust.

Not all weather talk is small talk. Global anthropogenic climate change is the biggest conservation challenge of our lifetimes.
