2010 Winter Issue 6 (February 19, 2010)
Last Friday and Saturday the women’s track and field team hosted a number of competitors at the Meet of the Hearts. The team surprised many by putting together enough points to place second in the team competition. It was quite a feat, made possible by the number of first and second places the team recorded. The action kicked of with the pentathlon and 5k on Friday night. The success will continue this weekend as the team heads up to the University of Minnesota to enjoy some fierce competition.
The men’s track team hosted the Meet of the Hearts Friday and Saturday at the Rec Center, scoring 83 points to finish fifth of ten teams. The Knights will next compete tomorrow at the St. Olaf Tostrud Classic against the Oles, St. Thomas, Augsburg and Wisconsin-River Falls.
This past weekend, two of Carleton’s intercollegiate ultimate teams, the Gods of Plastic and Syzygy, descended on sunny San Diego to participate in the Pres Day Invitational tournament. For both teams, this tournament would be their first outdoor play of the 2010 season.
The Carleton College men’s basketball team (10-8, 6-7 MIAC) continued its second-half surge with a 65-42 victory over visiting Concordia College. Junior Seth Jonker tallied a game-high 15 points to pace the Knights, who won their third straight game. Jeremy Sutherland chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. The Knights’ stifling defense held Concordia to 16 percent shooting in the first half, helping Carleton carry a 29-13 lead into intermission. The Cobbers shot 26 percent overall for the contest compared to 47 percent for Carleton.
