Carleton College’s Avery Johnson was both outstanding and clutch in her first collegiate javelin victory Saturday at the Norse Relays hosted by Luther (Iowa) College. Johnson pulled out her first-place finish on her final throw to prevail in an exciting back-and-forth competition, recording one of the top throws in school history in the process. For her performance, Johnson was named the MIAC Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Week.
Johnson got off to a good start in the javelin Saturday at Luther, taking the lead with just two rounds remaining. However, a Luther student-athlete pulled ahead on the second-to-last round, leaving Johnson with just one more chance. She came through in a big way, recording a throw of 36.78 meters on her final attempt to pull back in front and secure the win. The distance is her personal best and the fifth-best javelin performance in Knights’ history. It ranks second in the MIAC this season, less than one meter behind the leader.
