Doug Sylvester '08: A True American Hero

A standout even during his freshman year, Doug is a .330 career hitter, and has ranked at or near the top of the team in each of his four seasons in runs scored, walks, and clutch plays. He plays baseball the way it was meant to be played, and both scouts and fans gush about his team-first mentality, Papa Smurf-like leadership ability, and smile that could make your heart melt.

Competition rises as applicant pool grows; College sees a two percent increase in number of applicants

For the school’s admissions department, April and May represent a conclusion to all of their efforts from throughout the year. After sifting through thousands of applications from November to March, the admissions office now reaps the fruit of their labors as accepted students have responded to the school for the class of 2012.

And it’s been good news for the school. With one of the biggest high school graduating classes in history, there was a 2% increase in the number of applicants as the pool rose to 4950 applicants. Accepted students are coming from 40 states and 16 foreign countries. As of now, excluding students yet to be accepted from the waitlist, there will be 496 students, 250 men and 246 women, with 21% of those students coming from multicultural background and 7% of new students coming from foreign countries.

Arb Notes

This past Friday evening the Arb Naturalists enjoyed the opportunity to watch the mating display of the American Woodcock, a brown mottled seagull-like bird with a long bill. The complex “sky dance” of the male woodcock takes place during sunset each evening starting in April and commencing in May. The display is best described by Aldo Leopold in an essay from “A Sand County Almanac.”

Food For Thought: From the Carleton Bookstore...

I am asked surprisingly often by customers if I have read every book in the Carleton Bookstore. As the General Books Manager in the store I have the good fortune to spend my days surrounded by titles that I would gladly devour. I am also frequently told that I have the ideal job because surely I must spend my day behind the counter reading to my heart’s content.

Cooking With Carls: Minnesotan Walleye Sandwich

My often outwardly directed attention for Cooking with Carls has led to exploration of different cuisines and food items, such as Egyptian falafels and American artisan cheese. In comparison, I admit that little attention was given to the local culinary tradition. It's about the time to take a close look at what's eaten in Minnesota.

Redefining expectations placed on mothers in the United States

Mothers in the United States face the judgments of a culture that hesitates to consider the work of a mother as a legitimate job. There exists a general acknowledgement that the “work of a mother is never done” and yet there remains a crippling double standard faced by women who choose to become mothers.

Explosion When My Pen Hits, Tremendous

I twirled the phone around in my hand, trying to decide whether or not to call her. I’d been getting sick of Carleton lately, and I wanted to talk with someone from home who might pick me up a little. She seemed like the most understanding person I could call. But, for some reason, perhaps shame at the fact I hadn’t called in a while, I set down the phone to call some other time.

Tocqueville and Numa: CSA funding: the values behind the rules

We wanted to zero in, this week, on the part of CSA about which students most often think: its budget. Carleton seems like a place of bountiful resources, and in many ways it is. Still CSA, like all the other parts of the college operates under considerable financial constraints, albeit significantly different ones.

Stroke of Genius: The role of a columnist

Every week, it seems, I manage to enrage some member or group of the school community. I have been publicly confronted and bitterly argued with, but is this my duty as a columnist? As a contributor to the Carletonian, I write an article each week. I hardly ever know what I will be writing about until I sit down and just type something out.

Friedrich Schiller in the News: New York Times asks “Where’s Schiller?”

Question: If Ulysses S. Grant is buried in Grant’s Tomb, who is buried in Friedrich Schiller’s tomb? Answer: Not Friedrich Schiller. Two years of DNA research has determined that none of the remains billed as those of the poet and playwright were actually his, The Associated Press reported, citing MDR television.
