The Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) is Carleton’s hub for place-based, experiential learning beyond campus; reciprocal community-campus collaborations; and publicly-engaged scholarship, leadership, and action.

Each year, the CCCE At-A-Glance document is created to help explain the mission, vision, and objectives of the CCCE. It highlights stories and statistics about the people, partner organizations, and activities that have happened in the recent past. See the full document in pdf form for more information.

Mission

The Center for Community & Civic Engagement creates and sustains opportunities for meaningful engagement for the Carleton community to deepen learning, broaden knowledge, and develop reciprocal relationships. Through thoughtful action, analysis, and reflection, the Center promotes integration of engagement with the College’s deep commitments to student development, teaching, learning, and scholarship.

Vision

To engage in inclusive, sustainable, reciprocal relationships that foster student learning and faculty development, fulfill community identified needs, and promote an equitable and peaceful society.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand issues in their real world complexity
  • Recognize and honor different forms of knowledge that may reside in/with community partners
  • Deepen awareness of one’s positionality in civic engagement efforts, such as gender, race, and socioeconomic background.
  • Take academic knowledge and do something with it beyond the classroom while learning in the process
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Nurture a commitment to life-long civic engagement

Strategic Objectives

  1. Deepen student learning by focusing student programs on CCCE student learning objectives.
  2. Align with the long term goals of our key community and on-campus partners.
  3. Enhance CCCE’s communications efforts to foster a clearer understanding of the role of the CCCE and its mission at Carleton and in the community.
  4. Address structural barriers to equal opportunities for community and civic engagement and strengthen our efforts to create an inclusive, diverse, and accessible Center for all.
  5. Strengthen faculty development around academic civic engagement and public scholarship.
