Anthropology of Health and Illness: Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg
Anthropology Professor Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg began working with Carleton Alumni and HealthFinders Director Angie Koch in the Fall of 2006. Feldman-Savelsberg offers 2-3 internship-type positions every winter in her Anthropology of Health and Illness Class under the direction of Koch. At the end of the term and 15 total hours of service and community based research students write their final paper on either 1) and ethnographic, community-based research study project on a topic relevant to the Northfield-Dundas-Faribault area (ex. Minority Healthcare Education in Rice County) or 2) a study directly relevant to the issues and demographics of HealthFinders outlined by Koch (ex. Emergency room use in the area related to chronic disease like diabetes). All papers are given to both Feldman-Savelsberg and Koch.
Protest, Power and Grassroots: Carolyn Wong
Associate Professor of Political Science Carolyn Wong has taken experiential education at Carleton to a new level. Her Power, Protest and Grassroots class not only observed the caucus process in Iowa but has also learned about grassroots politics through service by canvassing for Presidential candidates in Minneapolis and voting in the Minnesota Democratic Primaries. Wong ties experiences outside the classroom with academic readings as well as newspaper updates and speakers, including Minnesota DFL Party leaders. Wong encourages students to use personal experiences in their discussion and written work for the class as well as one of three papers on a topic relating to the experiences outside the classroom.
