Travel Grants

NOTE: FUNDING FROM THE MELLON GRANT IS RUNNING LOW -- ALREADY EXHAUSTED IN MANY CATEGORIES. Check with Scott Carpenter before developing new proposals.

The Global Engagement Initiative invites proposals from faculty (singly or in small groups) who need to travel as they establish or enhance “globally connected” aspects of our curriculum. While our funds are primarily designated for international travel, some domestic expeditions can also be funded. Our interests include:

  • Supplementing OCS travel grants: Off-Campus Studies has issued its annual Call for Proposals focusing on three areas: development of Carleton off-campus seminars; mentoring trips with an experienced faculty director; or familiarization with existing programs. GEI funds can be used to supplement such requests.
  • Curricular coordination with off-campus faculty: Carleton faculty may connect with colleagues at another location where we regularly send (or hope to send) students, in hopes of better integrating student’s off-campus and on-campus experiences.
  • Internships, service learning, research: Faculty may establish internship or service-learning possibilities for students (often through third parties)—especially in locations where we or our partners offer off-campus programs.
  • Conferences, workshops, curricular development: Faculty may participate at events focusing on crucial areas of our grant: off-campus learning, the integration of global issues in local curricula, foreign-languages-across the curriculum, etc. (Note that we do have some limitations on what can be funded for domestic vs. international travel. Also, please note we generally cannot fund standard research trips or participation in conferences that would generally be funded by Headley funds.)

(Because there is some overlap between this inviation for proposals and that issued annually by Off-campus Studies, GEI and OCS will consult with one another as needed.)

The GEI Steering Committee will be especially interested in projects that have a high probability of producing concrete benefits for students (although those benefits may be indirect). In general, we need to know what is to be accomplished by your travel and how, with specific descriptions of the expected outcomes. Proposals may be short (often a single page is sufficient), but should include information about connections to the curriculum or other aspects of student experience. In cases where your project interacts with, or depends on, other programs or initiatives (on campus or away), please show the support you have received from these bodies.  Include a budget that shows expected travel, lodging, food, and miscellaneous expenses.

This is a rolling process, so there is no firm deadline; however, it's always best to get your request in as early as possible. Feel free to send inquiries to Scott Carpenter (scarpent@carleton.edu) or Katie Ryor (kryor@carleton.edu). Requests will eventually need to include the Chair Endorsement Form (available on this page) before any funds are awarded.
