Carleton College will host two important annual events in the coming weeks that will have a major impact on its neighbors. The College’s 139th Commencement will take place on Saturday, June 15, in a ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the Bald Spot, the lawn west of Hulings Hall on the Carleton campus. Carleton’s alumni reunion activities will be held June 20-23. The event hosts nearly 2,000 Carleton alumni and features a wide variety of events.

Carleton is pleased to announce an exciting partnership with neighboring St. Olaf College and the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation (NDDC). In conjunction with the NDDC's College-Community Collaboration Committee, plans are now in place to launch and support a multi-year, interdisciplinary series of college-community projects.

This Friday, the College will be working on a video project to document the move of various faculty and staff members to the Weitz Center for Creativity. This special project will block off College Street from 1st Street to 3rd Street from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and will include a gathering of participants on the Bald Spot during the afternoon as well.

The Washington Times recently covered Carleton’s “Empty Bowls” event, which raises money and awareness regarding hunger relief. Writer Donna Rae Scheffert attended the event on Carleton’s campus and gave her impressions, noting that the six-year-old event has raised more than $26,000 to battle hunger in the Northfield community. Carleton College’s Acting in the Community Together (ACT) Center will hold its annual Lighten Up! Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 17, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 18, in the West Gym on the Carleton campus. As in previous years, all profits from the popular sale will be split between the Northfield Union of Youth (The Key), Northfield Special Olympics, and Project Friendship. Through the collaborative efforts of the ACT Center, these three local organizations and community volunteers, the Lighten Up! Garage Sale has been a highly successful fundraiser that provides essential funds for these Northfield non-profits and champions “green” living.

The Carleton College Advisory Council on College and Community Relations will hold a community open house on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the College’s Alumni Guest House. The public is invited to attend. The purpose of the gathering is to allow community members to offer comments on the architectural renderings of the Arts Union’s exterior.

Carleton College invites the Northfield community to participate in a week-long symposium celebrating the life and work of renowned American author James Baldwin.

Carleton College invites the Northfield community to celebrate Shabbat, the weekly Sabbath or day of rest in Judaism, with a special series of events featuring teacher and author Rabbi Jack Riemer. The celebration takes place Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5, in Severance Great Hall on the Carleton campus and will feature relaxed and joyful services, catered meals, and provocative lectures by Rabbi Riemer. All events are free and open to the public, although reservations are appreciated.

Carleton College’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is sponsoring its second free home computing equipment recycling day of the school year on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. – 12 noon. There will be no charge to dispose of computing equipment. Allowable equipment includes computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice and other basic computing equipment. This disposal is for personal/home equipment and is not available to businesses.

The Carleton Advisory Council on Community Relations will host a community open house on Thursday, February 28 from 6-7:15 p.m. in Carleton’s Alumni Guest House meeting room to provide an update on the College’s plans to construct a residence hall on the east side of campus. The public is invited to attend.
