More than three-quarters of Carleton students have served in their hometown communities by the time they arrive on campus, and once here students collectively log some 4,000 hours in volunteer work each term.

The Carleton ACT Center sponsors student volunteer projects throughout the community—from companionship programs with area youth, special-needs, and elderly residents, to health, environmental and social justice efforts.

Many students also participate in service-learning programs, a combination of community service and academic learning that meets a community need. Local organizations who have benefited from such partnerships include the Northfield Historical Society, the Cannon River Watershed Project, the Girl Scouts and many others.
