Angelina Weld Grimké (February 27, 1880 – June 10, 1958) was the first African American female student to attend the Carleton Academy, a preparatory school that was a part of the college campus from 1866 to 1906.  She went on to be an American journalist, teacher, playwright and poet who came to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance; she was one of the first African-American women to have a play publicly performed.  A list of previous Grimke Lectures can be found here.

B-Boy Battle

From site: Viz

Some of the hip hop world’s best b-boys (or “break-boys”) will take to the floor in a not-to-be-missed battle on Friday, Oct. 1, beginning at 7 p.m., in the Carleton College Recreation Center. The battle--a competition between a half dozen “crews” from the Twin Cities, Carleton and Northfield--will be judged by three world-class b-boys hailing from New York City: Kid Glyde, Whorah, and Gravity. Featuring fancy footwork, acrobatic style, and back-beats provided by Chicago-based DJ Lester Burnem, this event is free and open to all ages.

Friday, October 1st, 7:00 p.m. Rec Center: B-Boy (Breakdance) Competition
Saturday October 2nd, East Gym, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon: Master Class

Breaking or b-boying (breakdancing) is an integral part of popular American culture in larger cities. The artists pride themselves in their fancy footwork and acrobatic style. The battle--a competition between a half dozen “crews” from the Twin Cities, Carleton and Northfield--will be judged by three world-class b-boys from New York City: Kid Glyde, Whorah, and Gravity. Last year Kid Glyde was one of only 16 b-boys in America to be selected for the Red Bull BC1 competition; this year Gravity has been selected. These b-boys are members of Dynamic Rockers, one of the original b-boy groups from the 1970s. They regularly take part in international competitions, and next month they will be representing the United States at the b-boy championship in the United Kingdom. This is a unique opportunity to see b-boys in action, and you are invited to attend and bring your families. On Saturday morning there will be a master class from 10 to noon in the East Gym. Sponsored by: Departments of German & Russian, Viz, Dean of the College, CAMS, Theater & Dance, and Studies in the Arts.
