Lagbaja’s music Africano is characterized by a unique fusion of the contemporary and the ‘traditional’ Yoruba artistic values. This essay seeks to break down the exact orientation of musical styles and cultural influences within Lagbaja’s music to determine how his work reflects and comments upon the experiences and attitudes of the ‘voiceless’ members of Nigerian society. Particular attention will be paid to his use of masquerade symbolism, traditional Yoruba musical idioms, and religiously charged lyrics to reveal how Lagbaja’s music itself is argues for a reconsideration of the role that pre-colonial Yoruba values and styles should play in a rapidly evolving cosmopolitan consciousness.
