The telenovela Yo soy Betty la fea was broadcast in Colombia in 1998 and in the years since has been sold to television stations in over 70 countries around the world as well as inspiring nineteen countries to do their own versions. This talk examines the curious, transnational power of the original program in order to better place and understand the national investments involved in the adaptation to the U.S. screen as Ugly Betty.
