American Studies is a program offering a variety of courses on major problems and themes in American life. Rather than studying only American History or American Music or American Politics, we bring these subjects together, along with religion and art to produce an interdisciplinary perspective on America and its impact on global society.Can I major in it? Yes, a major is offered in this course of study.
Topics explored: Identity, assimilation, myth, hierarchy, socialization and culture.
How to get started: Take AMST 115: Placing Identities (fall) or The Immigrant Experience (spring), which serves as the introductory course in this field. In addition, 100-level courses in American History, American Literature, Political Science, and Religion in America are relevant to this program.
