Careers in Art and Art History
For students seeking professional work in Art History, the main opportunities lie in college and university teaching, museums, galleries, auction houses, architecture, historic preservation, publishing, corporate collections, archival and library work, software development and application, intellectual property law, and arts administration. Art History is increasingly taught in medical schools as well, in order to strengthen students' visual diagnostic skills.
For studio art students who are professionally oriented, the studio major becomes a gateway to careers that include the fine arts, commercial art, the design fields, computer graphics, the crafts, museum work, teaching, and architecture. The Department maintains a list of career paths chosen by alumni over the years. The Carleton College Career Center also helps students make informed choices.
