Carleton Art Gallery

The Art Gallery, located in the Music and Drama Center, is another important resource for the Department. Exhibitions cover a broad range of topics, including shows put together by the Director and guest curators on particular themes as well as exhibitions developed by external organizations. The Art Gallery is also the main venue for the senior studio majors' exhibition each May.

Art History students have the opportunity to work with the Gallery Director on specific projects, often for extra academic credit. In 1999, for example, a group of students mounted in Gould Library a small exhibition of "Etching Revival" prints --European and American works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Carleton art collection. In 2000, students selected photographs for an exhibition called "Picking Pictures" in the Carleton Art Gallery. In 2001, "After Ukiyo-E: Modern Japanese Landscape Prints" was student curated. Works from the Carleton collection are regularly used in classroom teaching.

Minneapolis Institute of Arts

So valuable is the MIA as a resource that faculty members lead one or more field trips there each term. The museum has outstanding collections of European, American and Asian art.

Walker Art Center

As one of the country's most renowned centers for contemporary art, the Walker is important for Carleton students of art and art history. In addition to taking students to the museum on course-connected field trips, the department also organizes buses to the Walker for lectures and performances.
