Epson Scanners

1. Click on Epson Scan software.
2. Check scanner surface for dirt and dust. Wipe clean.
3. In the window that pops up select Professional Mode.
4. Set resolution to 300 dpi.
5. Click on Descreening Filter at the bottom of the settings window
6. Place item on the glass and click Preview.
7. Crop the image by drawing a box around it.
8. Set Target Size (expand window by clicking on lower right corner and dragging) to 3,000 pixels on the longest side of the image.
9. Click Scan
10. Save the image to the appropriate folder, number as on sheet, save as a jpg.
11. Watch the Descreening Filter as it may shut off by itself.

Other Scanners

Other scanners may have different settings. The important settings are:

• Resolution: should be a minimum of 72 dpi for PCs, 96 for Macs for screen viewing, 300 dpi and above for printing purposes (check your printer's capabilities). Using lower resolution with make your files smaller and easier to load and store.
• Descreening filter: This will make your images look less fuzzy and avoid that scanned-from-a-book look.
• Target (output) size: 3,000 pixels on the longest side will produce a good-sized image from most books for presentation. If your image is tiny, you may need to reduce that size to 1500 or even 1000 pixels. If your image in enormous you may want to increase the size, especially if you want to zoom into the image. Images may need to be resized for printing.
• Jpeg vs. Tiff: If you do not need to change the look of your image besides cropping and rotating, you can start with making it a jpeg. If you will be changing the appearance of an image like changing coloration, sharpening, etc., you will want to start with a tiff. Make your changes on a tiff (to prevent archiving – jpegs that have distorted areas), then make a jpeg for your presentation. It will load faster than a tiff.
