A site for REU opportunities
Once again this year we want to call your attention to a DIFFERENT REU site. The TIM Consortium is different from most other REU sites in that it is spread out over six campuses, each with two students working on problems related to Theoretically Interesting Molecules (TIM). The entire group of six faculty and 12 students will get together twice during the summer, once to spend a week at Chapel Hill for the Reaction Mechanisms Conference and again at the end of the summer to report on results. We especially encourage applications from underrepresented groups. See our web site at

REU - The University of Florida
The University of Florida invites students to participate in its NSF-funded International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana from May through July 2008. The goal of this program is to expand the educational experience of participants through research in ecology, environmental science, and conservation biology in tropical sub-Sahara Africa. Participants will travel with the Program Director to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana during the summer to work on defined research projects under the mentorship of Ghanaian scientists. They will conduct carefully selected projects focusing on ecological studies in the Cape Coast area such as the Kakum National Forest, one of the few virgin forests in Africa. Weekly seminars and workshops, led by Ghanaian professors, will provide participants opportunities to learn beyond their disciplines. Field trips to cultural sites will take place during the weekends. Airfare, room and board will be provided. Participants will receive a stipend at the end of the program. Additional information and applications are available at

Research Assistants - Carleton Psychology Dept
Research Assistants Sought for a Study Examining Co-morbidity
Between Panic Disorder and Nicotine Dependence
Do you have an interest in health psychology, psychopathology, or neuroscience? Are you looking for research experience and perhaps authorship on a poster/article to strengthen your graduate school applications? Would it be helpful to receive Psychology 292 (Independent Research) credits?
My lab team will examine a possible causal mechanism for the high rate of co-morbidity between panic disorder and nicotine dependence. In particular, we will compare smokers not in withdrawal and ex-smokers (the new populations) to smokers in acute withdrawal and non-smokers (previously studied populations) on fear reactivity to carbon dioxide inhalations. The primary purpose of the study is to ascertain whether acute nicotine withdrawal is necessary to demonstrate heightened fear reactivity to carbon dioxide among smokers.
Possible reasons why smokers in withdrawal may be hypersensitive to carbon dioxide include a) high bloodstream carbon-monoxide levels from smoking affect a putative “suffocation monitor” (most likely located in the brainstem), and b) fear becomes a learned response among smokers to unusual somatic sensations (induced by either nicotine withdrawal or carbon dioxide).
As a research assistant you would engage in a variety of activities, including the following:
* screening potential participants for a variety of mental and medical disorders
* running participants through the carbon dioxide re-breathing procedure
* attending weekly meetings with the research team to discuss the protocol
* assisting with data analysis and interpretation
I’m looking for highly motivated students who are current (or future) psychology majors or neuroscience concentrators to join the lab team. Because of the training involved, preference will be given to students who would be interested in working on the team for three terms. Research assistants may elect to take independent research pass/fail or for a grade.
To apply, please send an email by February 11 to kabrams@carleton.edu
Include your year, psychology and overall GPA, and major/concentration. Also, please note the psychology/neuroscience courses you have taken along with your potential career goals. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Ken Abrams
