It is a very competitive program. We usually have about 125 applications for about 10 positions. The program starts the first week in June and goes to the end of August.  The application deadline for our summer lab science program is February 25, 2011.

Course Title: "The Hawaiian Humpback Whale: Field Research, Maui, Hawaii."

Ocean Mammal Institute: Join the Ocean Mammal Institute (OMI) in Maui as a research intern as we pioneer the way in the most important fields of study in the 21st century: Conservation Biology and Ecopsychology. Together, we can turn the tide of extinction!

As an OMI research intern you will be expected to do the following:
1. Study the biology and behavior of humpback whales while you observe and record their spectacular behaviors.
2. Learn and apply the principles of field research design.
3. Gain a personal understanding of the politics of protecting endangered species.
4. Learn about current research on whales and dolphins around the world and related conservation issues.
5. Be introduced to the field of Ecopsychology, which studies the relationship between humans and the natural world.

What a typical day is like:
• Conduct shore-based data collection. This involves tracking whales and boats with a theodolite and recording whale behaviors. All this is conducted on the top of a hill where you can look down on the whales. This is conducted 4 hours everyday in the hot sun.
• Plot and graph your data daily.
• Read and discuss articles for the evening discussion. There are over 70 articles and the book you will be expected to read. Evening discussions are conducted every night and last approx 2 hours.

Additional requirements:
• Take 2 written tests (midterm and final exam).
• Write a research paper.
• Write an essay.

Living arrangements:
• Four to six students in a furnished apartment.
• Apartment has full kitchen, living area, bedrooms and bathrooms.

• Take this course as an Independent Study Course, through your college. If taking this course for credit you receive your credit from your school, not OMI.
• Arrive in Hawaii January 3 depart January 21, 2011.
• Price - $2500.00 (Includes research supplies and accommodations.) This fee does not include airfare or food.

CDC/ATSDR’s National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) is offering a 10-week summer internship program for students in Environmental Studies, Ecology, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, and other related majors to take place June 9-August 13, 2010. During the course of the internship, students are introduced to environmental health at the federal level through project collaboration, experiential learning opportunities, individual environmental health presentations, journal clubs, field trips, brown bag lunches, and through shadowing and mentoring relationships at CDC/ATSDR. Interns will be based at CDC/ATSDR’s Atlanta-Chamblee Campus where NCEH/ATSDR is housed. Students are paid $500 a week during the course of the program. Eligibility requirements for CLEH interns:

·         US citizenship or Permanent Resident with a green card,
