Job Opening

Brian has a position open for a student to work four hours per week for the Dean’s Office. The job is chemical hygiene assistant and involves work with hazardous waste and safety equipment in chemistry, biology and geology. In order to minimize disrupting labs in these departments, the work needs to be done on Mondays and/or Fridays. If you are interested, see Brian ASAP.

Periodic Table meets this Thursday in the East Dining Hall. We meet at noon in the chemistry hallway and walk over together, or you can join us there. If you are off board, the department will cover your lunch.


Annual All Science and Math Poster Session
Register by October 9

You are invited to attend and/or present a poster for the annual celebration of student scholarship in science and math.

If you decide to present, you must register online (http://serc.carleton.edu/cismi/register.html) by Friday, October 9. You will also be asked (not required) to upload your posters online (http://serc.carleton.edu/cismi/poster_upload.html), with research advisor permission where proprietary concerns are an issue. This event is co-sponsored by Sigma Xi and CISMI, and they will pay for the printing of electronic posters.

University of Michigan
Biomedical Sciences Graduate School PREVIEW
October 29-31, 2009

Underrepresented students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences are encouraged to consider the Biomedical Sciences PREVIEW weekend on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor Campus.

PREVIEW includes:

  • an all-expense-paid visit for selected participants (i.e., travel, lodging and on-campus meals)
  • activities and workshops on applying and attending graduate school at UM including the PIBS Annual Biomedical Sciences Open House (http://www.med.umich.edu/pibs/prospective/openhouse/
  • one-on-one and group interactions with faculty
  • networking with current graduate students and peers from across the country
  • tour of campus, facilities and the city of Ann Arbor

Graduate Recruitment Event for the College of Engineering
University of Wisconsin, Madison

Each year the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, hosts a three-day graduate recruitment event known as “The Opportunities in Engineering Conference” scheduled for November 4 through November 8, 2009. The conference gives selected students an opportunity to hear faculty research presentations, tour laboratories, meet with current graduate students and individually with faculty in the student’s area of interest, and tour the city of Madison as well as the UW campus. All expenses including travel, housing, and food are paid in full by the College of Engineering (with the exception of food for Saturday and Sunday). They are particularly interested in identifying underrepresented candidates including women and students of color. All applicants should be in their junior or senior year. The application deadline is September 25, 2009.
