Information for Women Chemists Who Are Considering Graduate School

Ellen Wang Althaus (’89) has contacted us as the Director of Women in Chemistry Programs at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her role is to advocate for and foster the educational and professional success of women at all levels in the Department of Chemistry at Illinois.

Illinois Chemistry, ranked consistently among the top ten chemistry departments in the country, provides a wide range of resources for the academic and professional development of its graduate students. Among these, the Department of Chemistry sponsors several programs to enhance the professional development of its female graduate students and post-docs through the ACS East Central Illinois Women Chemists Committee (ECI-WCC) and the Women in Chemistry (WIC) Programs.

Illinois’ students have taken advantage of workshops on interviewing, negotiations, leadership development, technical writing, work-life balance and career planning. Annual events include the Sylvia Stoesser Lecture in Chemistry and the Retreat for Graduate Women in Chemistry. The retreat provides additional opportunities for professional development and networking and includes a special forum to help first-year students navigate through important decisions regarding research groups, classes, and chemistry areas. More details about the Women Chemists Committee and the Women in Chemistry programs are available at the following websites: http://www.chemistry.illinois.edu/about/wic/wcc/index.html; http://www.chemistry.illinois.edu/about/wic/index.html

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois seeks students with outstanding academic credentials and strong potential for chemical research. If you’re interested in Illinois, you can contact Ellen at ealthaus@illinois.edu or 217-244-1259.
