Department Picnic

Come one, come all to the Joint Math Department/CS Department picnic! Let's celebrate the end of the year with a feast of good conversation and picnic food on the Hill of Three Oaks at noon on Tuesday, June 3rd. Enjoy the sunshine. Play games with and against the faculty. Make sure to put your name on the signup page by the glass doors on the second floor of the CMC. That's essential to ensure that we have enough food for everyone. Add your name by 4 pm on Friday, May 30. It's going to be fun; we hope to see you there!

Turing Award Winner To Visit Our Department

Next week, Turing Award winner Ron Rivest will be visiting our department as part of the Carleton College Chesley Lecture program. The Turing Award is the equivalent of a Nobel Prize in computer science, so this is a big deal! Prof. Rivest is the "R" in the RSA encryption algorithm, which is used, well, everywhere. For example, it's how your web browser is communicating with secure websites when you see that padlock icon. Prof. Rivest is currently very interested in voting system security. If you've paid any attention at all to the debate that's occurred over the last few years regarding electronic voting systems, you'll really want to hear what he has to say. Click above for more details on his talks.

It would be an official paid student-work job, and he'd like to find someone to complete this work by the end of the term, but some work early in the summer would also be possible. Specifically, he needs someone with knowledge of Excel-based Visual Basic to debug a program. The project should take a small amount of time but a longer assignment may also be available.
